A Reason to Celebrate

Dylin was born with Polycystic Kidney Disease. She has been the miracle child, unaffected by this horrible disease so far. But 2 years ago this month, Dylin became very ill. We thought it must have been from her kidneys, but it wasn't. We were now looking into what could be an entire new disease, in her blood! Dylin spent 3 months in and out of the hospital and saw countless doctors. After numerous tests and 5 specialists that could not agree on her diagnosis.... I took matters in my own hands! It was midnight on a Friday night and I searched on UCLA's website for the pediatric hematology group. As I looked over pages of doctors’ names, I prayed I'd know which one to email and hopefully grab their attention. As any mother would, I chose the lead Chief of Staff for the Hematology group. I wasn't playing around! I sent a brief email and attached Dylin's numerous lab & radiology reports. TEN hours later, we received a call from UCLA asking if we could be there Monday morning. They had never seen a PT/PTT (blood clotting ratio) count so high before in a child. I thought my heart was going to stop. You never want to hear news like that from a world renowned medical center. Dylin and I flew there on Monday morning and after 12 vials of blood drawn, we had a meeting with 5 members from the hematology group, including the head doctor I emailed. Dylin was diagnosed in 24 hours. She has a lupus variable in her blood that makes it hard for her blood to clot. It affects her liver, which was the first sign we had that there was something wrong. As much as you don't want to hear Lupus or that she now has two incurable diseases, it was a relief to have answers. The good news that was presented, but not promised because Dylin was so young, was that UCLA had seen children grow out of it as their blood "got older." For the past two years, we've watched carefully of accidents and tested her blood every 3-6 months. Last week, Dylin saw the hematology group in Vegas to check her blood count. We've been told that if we didn't see the numbers lowering by the time she was around 6 and 7 years old, the disease would probably not go away. Last night, I received a quiet phone call from Dylin's doctor. When I heard a crackling voice on the other end, my heart sank. His voice was crackling because he was choked up with joy to tell me Dylin's numbers didn't just decrease but that they stabilized to where they should be; just like any other child!

We still have a long tough road ahead with Dylin's kidney disease but as for today, we are celebrating that our little Rock Star's battle for life has paid off!!

In honor of Dylin’s amazing news, our good friends at Golden Spoon would like to host a “Dylin Night.” A portion of all sales on THIS Thursday, March 24th, at the Eastern/Sienna Heights location will be donated to The Dylin Cenname Medical Fund. As of today our family has raised & donated over $125,000.00 in funds for research, to find a cure for PKD.

Dylin & her family will be at Golden Spoon from 5:30-8:30pm. You may also support her by purchasing frozen yogurt anytime during business hours and mention you are there for Dylin!

Every year, the kids wake up to heart pancakes, fruit and gifts.

Sweetest story.... Tyler and his friends unravelled a baseball. Dylin had collected all the string inside (without any of us seeing) and saved it for Jordyn. She gave it to her Valentines morning and said, "This string is for you to sew with, since I know how much you love to sew." awwwwwe.

Jordyn had to bring a home made Valentine box. Hello??!!! Did you think we were just going to bring a shoe box? Haha Big Ha. We can't be simple about anything. LOVE THIS!!!

In Training - Lesson 1

I'd be a horrible Mother if I said I just started teaching my kids tid bits of stuff in life they need to know. We're just starting to blog it, that's all.

As much as I want my kids to be with me for the rest of their lives, I don't want them to be. (maybe next door). You hear the Moms that say, "I can't wait till school starts back up." I'm the Mom that says, "I want my kids to stay home with me."
But since they can't, I'm training them to be independent. Along with their friends too. If you're hanging out over here, we may surf down the stairs on boogie boards, but know that you'll be learning how to change the filter on my reverse osmosis too. (I need some other children to be strong individuals too, who will my kids marry?)

We learned how to use self check out at the grocery store.....
(who doesn't love running items over the scanner? I always fight my girls to be the checker when we play store at home.)

"Huh?"

I'd say Jordyn's #1 thing is to eat! She is our sweets gal in the house!

So an ice cream bar with every topping, is right up her alley.

Some of the other things we did were: played minute to win it, watched a movie outside on the projection screen, swam, a sleepover, played Dance Central on Kinects, and more.

It was a fun but exhausting night!

One month before Josh’s 13th birthday, he lost his life in tragic accident. His time on Earth was much too short, but his kind heart and spirit will live forever. The Josh Stevens Foundation and Dylin's Foundation have joined together to bring awareness to the Be Kind campaign and Polycystic Kidney Disease. Profits from shirt sales will be shared between the two foundations.

When thinking of a slogan for Dylin's shirts, I explained to her what we were doing and asked her what she wanted it to say. (on the front of the shirts they all say Be Kind, and the back's have different sayings on them).Without a moments hesitation Dylin said, "What about, Rock On! Because I Rock On after all my blood tests and other testing." I had chills through my body, and knew this was perfect!!!
She also told me down to the detail of what she wanted her logo to look like. With Dylin's requests, this is what I sketched. The entire project was exciting for the both of us and we are happy to share this with you!

This logo and Josh's logo are both on the back of the shirts as well!

Oh mighty child of mine.... I have been trying to keep track of her "mouth" lately. Hopefully I can describe just how funny and creative she is!

Dyl - "I'm thinking about how I want to make a difference in the world."
Me - "Oh really and how do u plan on that?"

Me - "Well how about you be a good example to others by acting nice."
Dyl - "Well that's not going to work, I'm on Christmas break from school."
Me - "Dyl you can be nice at home, friends houses, other places, not just at school!"

Dyl - "How many minutes do I stay in time out?
Me - "6 minutes cuz your 6!"

Me - "No you won't cuz robins cookies are on the counter."

She said, "first Uh-ball (of all) I am hungry, thirsty, need a piece of white

I said, "none, go climb your butt in bed."
She said, "you lost that wasn't any of the ideas, guess I get to pick!"

Another crazy night in our home... during winter break... for no reason!!

We made cookie trains. Although there aren't any pictures, upclose... because this became a free for all and pretty much I had kids frosting candy and cookies into the shapes of body parts & just a caboose, etc. So after one hour of kids loaded up on a sugar high... we turned to killing time by playing Minute to Win it Games. This was FUNNNNN!!!!

You had to get the cookie from your forehead to your mouth without using your hands. FOUR kids actually did this, it's hard! Try it.

FYI - You will look absolutely ridiculous!

Toss the marshmallows in the bowls, up the stairs, you have three misses, highest bowl... wins!

We had teams. It wasn't as easy as you think! In fact, Ben the 4 year old was the first to finally get one down after five 11 year olds tried. Go Ben!

The COOLEST teacher gift idea

A friend and I sent home a letter to parents asking for them to secretively send in a gift card (any denomination) with their child, give it to my child...

and we created a gift card tree (holder) with gift cards to all of his favorite places to shop & eat!

We did this for all our kids classes, this is just the only pic I have. The others were an actual mini tree.

So practical and much appreciated!!

I tried to get the adults to have a contest, but they were all too chicken to compete against me... except for Bert. This is his candy cane one! The kids voted that his was the most detailed and took a long time.

Dylin the Defender!

Dylin's first season of Soccer just ended. She is the defender (aka goalie).

The great thing is, she is really good at it! Her personality plays a strong roll out on the field. She is a character! Always yelling to the girls, telling them where to go, where to stand on a throw in, and when there's a corner kick you'll hear her scream, "GET ON THE ARC!"

Her coach is always saying, "thank you Dylin," because the girls aren't listening to him.

The other great news, her doctors are okay with her playing soccer as the defender. Because there isn't much physical contact, she doesn't have as large of risk hurting her kidneys. :o)

She was NOT happy the opposing team made a goal!!

The BEST scavenger hunt EVER!

I have this problem of outdoing myself. I have to top my own adventures. Tyler wanted to have another scavenger hunt! I thought, how in the world can I think of more things to do then the last several that we've had!!! No worries, just let me wait til the last minute and it'll be a hit! We had three teams. Each team had 1 hour 15 minutes to complete whatever items they chose on the list. They ranged between 1-3 points. If your team arrived back to the house late, a point was deducted for each minute late. Oh and of course, pictures must be taken!!
Did you think that was all? No way, we had shirts made! Team colors, names & jersey #'s on the back.

This was the list:
(most items were completed, but I only chose a few of the best pictures to post)

ONE POINT CHOICES:

- Picture in front of Krispie Kreme's while the Hot Now sign is lit.
- Each kid get an In N Out hat
- Go to any fire station and ask for one hat and one sticker
- Group pic with anyone with a name badge on
- One point for every napkin you bring back with a different logo or restaurant name on it.
- Have a store employee (any store) announce over the loud speaker, "Happy Birthday Tyler!"
- Get 12 mild or hot sauce packets from Taco Bell
- Get a fortune cookie, bring it back unopened.

- Find a Red Box with the Karate Kid Movie on the display board, take a picture with team pointing to it.

TWO POINT CHOICES:

- Go to any store that sells hoola hoops, all team members hoola hoop at the same time.
- Chinese fire drill (on a SAFE street)
- Group pic with anything that says Las Vegas in/on it
- Find a fountain and all members feet need to dip in.

- Fit all kids inside a grocery store cart

- Ride the carousel at the District

- Go to Baskin Robbins, each member sample pralines and cream ice cream.

THREE POINT CHOICES:

- Go to a grocery store, bowl a frozen turkey under one members legs while knocking down three stove top stuffing boxes

- Go to McDonalds and order a hamburger with 35 pickles on it. (bring it back)

- Get a menu from any restaurant (no copies, has to be an actual menu)
- Go to any GV Ranch statues and dress them in one piece of clothing or accessories from each kid in the group.

- Get any fast food restaurant to give you a kids meal toy
- Go into a store that sells shoes and every member try on high heels

- Go the kids are at the District play area and all members do snow angels for 30 seconds

The pink team came in a few minutes early with 34 points. The blue team was at 29, and then the red team rolled in 6 minutes late!! They had 40 points but with the 6 point deduction, they tied with the pink team. The pink team won $5 gift cards to Justice, the red team won $5 gift cards to Target and the blue team won baseball cards.

When they returned, we made oreo milkshakes, and killed time at Anthem park playing wiffle ball in the freezing cold til 11pm, toilet papered two homes, got slurpees at 11:30 and came back home!

The games didn't even stop there. They all spent the night and of course everyone fought for the couch. So we played toss the marshmallow in the bowl. Whom ever got to the highest bowl, won a spot on the couch. Think this was easy? No way, it was tie after tie and we went into rounds. After midnight, we had winners!!

I don't have a picture for this story, shocking I know! We were at Tyler's baseball game and Dylin was playing in the sand volleyball area. She came over and asked Grandma and I for water. We both knew immediately it wasn't to drink. I said, "Dylin, you aren't making mudd." She thought for about a split second, her eyes lit up and said, "I just need a drink." Grandma said, "yes, you can have a drink right here, you aren't taking the bottle." So she took a drink!
A few minutes later, she came back for another drink, and another and another! That little smartie pants was filling her mouth with the water and then spitting it into the sand!!!
(I feel bad for the kids that were playing with her mudd)

Jordyn usually plays sweeper in her soccer games. She finally got up the courage to ask her Coach to play her as half back. She scored her first goal!!!!

We are so excited. I had to contain myself from running on the field.

Jordyn is our sugar junkie so a soccer cake made of crushed oreo, was exactly how to celebrate with her!

A Weekend of Fun for no reason

I know, I know. I'm a week late posting this. Between PTA President, Mr. Pres., Mrs. Vice Pres, a 6 year old that makes you think you have six 6 year olds, watching Macy, baseball, both lil chicks in soccer..... the thought of blogging is quite annoying. ;o)

OH and I hate blogging without a picture and I haven't been able to capture one of Ty & Jordyn together since they BOTH WON!!!

These were the kids speeches. They did an amazing job in front of the entire school.
Jordyn's theme being with sweets, she had her friend Spencer hold up candy that had to do with her speech. It was so cute!

Tyler, well he was a little more difficult. I had 5 suggestions & his Papa Mike even wrote one up for him. He is in that embarissing stage, so to find something funny and make it memorable was a little hard. BUT he did finally agree to this one. (and he even used quite a bit of enthusiasm in his speech)

Cure our Dylin

If you have checked out Dylin's site, you've noticed it hasn't been updated for quite sometime. For some reason the password doesn't work and the system has been locked to get in and update it. Don't know what to do!!!
But I'm not letting it keep us from moving forward with her foundation. We are spreading the word about PKD in many ways and hopefully these ways will lead everyone to a site that is working!!! In our 7 years in dealing with Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD), we have learned that hardly anyone is familiar with this incurable disease.
I have been playing around with drawing up a logo for Dylin's site & to print on shirts.

We are also partnering with the Josh Steven's Foundation. Please go to their site and read about Josh's story. http://www.joshstevensfoundation.org/ (Joshi's Park, is the park we played at for J Day during the ABC Adventures). Josh's family has come up with a way to honor kids that "are caught" performing kind acts. They also sell BE KIND shirts with messages on the back that read .... it's contagious or .... Hit's a hit! Now there are over 50 schools that have BE KIND shirts sold in their schools and each school has their own slogan that follows the BE KIND.... (on the front) with their own message on the back. Our school recently came on board and my message was chosen for the back. It says, BE KIND.... It always returns!

Dylin will soon have her own BE KIND shirts. We have a slogan picked and ready to go, but it's a secret!!
We will announce & introduce the shirts on the blog. They sell for $10 and the profits will split between Josh's & Dylin's Foundations.

Tyler & Jordyn were both nominated by their classes to run for President & Vice President. We have to come up with a slogan, poster & speech this weekend. Here are a few I have thought of. Tyler is SO over me. hahahaha.

Tyler - "I'll put the STUD back in STUDent Council"
A large picture of him with this finger up his nose and put, "PICK ME! PICK ME!"

Jordyn - "Go with the Flow, vote for Jo-Jo"
"Sugar & Spice and all that is nice, vote Jordyn for VICE"

If they do a combo campaign, they could say.... "Don't go Nuts, vote for US"

Dylin's still the rock star! We don't know how, we aren't going to question and just believe that God indeed has great things planned for this little rascal. Her blood pressure? Great! Her kidney function? Great! Her attitude? Still the same, a fighter! Gotta just love her!

As for Tyler, he has blood work tomorrow morning.

We've got to get this thyroid medication exactly where it needs to be. Poor exhausted kid!

How long has "stats" been on our blogs? I just noticed this. A cool little gadget that shows you where your online traffic is coming from. So it'll say whether my friend clicked on to view mine from her blog, or whether someone typed in a general word like crap and different sites came up. (I'm sure mine came up many times, I kinda like that word). The other fascinating thing this shows is the traffic from where someone lives that's viewing my blog. It shows one from Israel, and another from Latvia, and since I don't have a clue where that is....it frankly scares the &%$! outa me!! It sorta freaks me out that strangers look at my blog. But I think making mine private would take away the fun, random side of me that just doesn't care. It's funny to have someone come up to you and tell me they nearly peed themselves reading about Tyler's pin worm story. In fact, on the tracker, it says that Pin Worms is the most common search that led several people to my blog. If you haven't read that story, you're missing out. I could save your child from having pin worms. (view by clicking on Tyler's label and scroll down, it was one of my first posts).
So if you have a blog and are just finding this out... have fun playing around on yours. Pretty darn fascinating.

No Tears!!! First year ever! Usually it's Jordyn or myself crying, but I maintained. Probably cause I was in so much pain still, I was crabby more than anything.

These were the conversations with my kids this morning....

Tyler - "Please Mom, I'm in 5th grade, you're not really wanting a picture!"

and "Please tell me there isn't a PTA in middle school." I said, "You already asked me that, no there isn't, are you happy now??" He smiled.

Dylin - (1st grade) I asked, "I'm going to cry, is that okay?" Dylin said, "Why would you cry, you know where I'm at, it's not like I'm lost or something!"

Good thing I have Jordyn!!!

She just simply said, "Bye Mom, I'm going to miss you!"

My laptops still broken, but Apple thinks it's Not my hard drive!!! So I should have it working tomorrow! I'm praying all my pictures are there! For those wondering at least what we did for W,X,Y and Z.
W - we had a waterballoon toss and waterballoon fight.
X - we called Sunday X day an eXtra special day with my parents. They were visiting.
Y - we went to Yogels frozen Yogurt.
Z - Tyler says we did Zip, meaning nothing. I was having surgery the next morning so I told the kids I had a-Zot to do (they didnt find me very funny)and then we needed to get our Zzzzz's that night. Not an exciting way to end the ABC Adventures but neither is getting your gallbladder out!! We've hit up Purple Penguin nearly everyday. The favorite penguin is going into hibernation tomorrow until March! :o(

Toilet paper night!!!! The 'Blondies' were hit! (Spencer & Sammi)

We were actually trying to hit up the Munn's and Meinert's but after standing in their front yards, we realized they were out of town. So sorry blondies, you couldn't come tonight and the boys were so excited to see where you lived! Funny thing is, we forgot they installed cameras. The next morning, they watched us. Dylin even danced in the camera for them and they said Tyler has the best throw. ;o)

This day was SOOOOO fun! Excuse the pictures being sketchy but my drivers... Rick & Bert were taking them with their phones. (and not all of them are uploaded yet, so I'll add the rest soon)
So, we had a Service Scavenger hunt. The two teams had 1 hour to drive to friends homes and do any 3 items on a list they had to choose from. Some of the items were: changing a babies diaper, wash dishes, fold towels, pick up dog poop, etc. Each item, depending the skill or how disgusting had a higher point value. We met up at Purple Penguin (of course) to reward our teams with a Sno cone!
There has been an on going dispute between the teams as to who has won. Rick had the higher score, but Bert says he completed all the tasks and didn't know you could do the same chore more than once to gain more points and they arrived first! Either way, it was fun!

Of course we had to have a SLEEPOVER. Every night the kids try to have one and call it something like

A-mazing sleepover, O-vernighter, B-ig sleepover... they get pretty creative.

Dalton brought Starburst to share with everyone! Just what we need, more sugar for our sleepover!!

We're so excited! Our ABC Adventures are under way! Yesterday we started with A.

My Dad & Tyler have a solution to fix the Oil spill in the Gulf and when my Dad was explaining his reasoning for his way of thinking, he told Tyler this story....

"I remember when I was a teenager learning to drive and one place I learned was on the Pasadena freeway. Well, this freeway was very narrow and winding. On the Los Angeles side there were maybe four tunnels you had to go into. These tunnels were like train tunnels that were rounded at the top. No big trucks were allowed on this freeway because of the height limits, but it was so confusing you could get mixed up very easily. Imagine this, the tunnels were built many years ago and the highest part (top of the round) was about 16 feet which made the lower part of the rounds maybe 12 to 14 feet. Many trucks today need 16 to 18 feet clearance. One day a truck driver got confused and ended up having to drive through the tunnels and got stuck under one because he was probably just at the 16 foot height. Not being able to go forward or backwards the truck was wedged inside of that tunnel and couldn't move forward or backwards. Police, tow truck companies, city workers, firemen and engineers didn't know how to get the truck out, it was stuck. Well traffic was backed up for miles and miles and eventually a car was passing with a young kid in the car and the young boy realized what happened and yelled out, WHY DON'T YOU LET THE AIR OUT OF THE TIRES!!"

Their solution is much like this story. "Keep it simple stupid!"

Quick trip to Utah

We headed to Utah for our 3rd annual Chelsi Peterson fun run. Chelsi was killed in car accident 2 years ago, right before 20th birthday. Each year on her birthday, we participate in a fun run at night.

Baby's got the Blues

Baby Macy won't take the bottle. My sister Robin is going back to teaching her little first graders on Monday and we're up a freakin' creek! Everyone says, "Oh she won't starve herself, don't worry!" WRONG! She will go hours upon hours and will scream until you want to scream with her. I don't know what to do! Today I tried for 30 minutes, Robin stepped in, and started singing songs to her. She thinks she is Phoebe on Friends. "You love this bottle, You love this bottle, it's your favorite thing in the world....you want the bottle, you want the bottle, the bottle is for youuuuuu!" Tyler chimes in, in a high octave range, "She wants a boob, She wants a boob!"

HAHAHAHAHA. He's so funny.

This has been the first week without baseball since February. Lots of swimming & sleeping :o) Tyler you did an amazing job! We are especially proud of you for keeping your head held high during Allstars. You're a great kid!!!!!

The Huge Ball

One day she thought it maybe I should have a ball. so she asked if someone could clean the huge castle, decorate the ballroom, and sew her pretty dress. then she thought I should make invitations. So she did. Once she was done she had to deliver one hundred twenty invitations. She walked twenty miles there and twenty miles back and was exhausted when she returned.

the princess thought I need to get some rest for tomorrow. She got up at 8:30 in the morning, got hte dress on ad said to herself, "I look beautiful!" the princess went down the stairs and saw someone she wanted to dance with. She said to the man in the black tuxedo with the nice accent, "I pick you to dance with." They danced until they got sick spinning around. Then the boy said, "would you like to marry me?"

She said, "yes!" They lived happily ever after.

Six years ago, we were told Dylin's life expectancy may be a few months. IF there was a miracle, she'd be on dialysis & have a transplant by the age of four. Today Dylin turned 6 & she is still the miracle that hasn't had either. We never know when our day will come, but as for today.... we celebrate her life! Happy birthday Rock Star, you're amazing!!!!! XOXOXOXO

Dylin has a charm bracelet. Every time she has a procedure, blood draw, etc she earns a charm.

She has over 30 :o(

Today, I thought she earned one just by being special and battling her way to SIX YEARS OLD!!!
